    Just recently been diagnosed with moderate emphasema. I don’t seem to have the strength to ambitiously swing and produce good golf shots anymore. Is this a lack of oxygen getting to my muscles? Any breathing exercises that might help?

      Hi Bob,

      With moderate emphysema, you are definitely not getting enough oxygen to the bloodstream and muscles. That is exactly what emphysema does. Though there is not a way to reverse emphysema, breathing exercises could start to get you a bit more oxygen during those sessions.

      A great exercise for you would be to sit comfortably and inhale as deeply as you can for a count of 5, hold the breath for a count of 2, and exhale fully for a count of 5. This will force the lungs to work a bit harder to get to the depths of the belly on the inhale, and empty the lungs fully on the exhale. You can do this one for 5-10 minutes as long as you are not getting lightheaded.

    Hey Mark,

    How do you control your breathing during the swing; do you inhale and block during the swing, or exhale before your swing?

      Hi Marc,

      The best way to control your breath DURING the swing is to forget about it. A nice, deep cleansing breath during the pre shot routine will relax the muscles and clear the mind long enough to swing comfortably and freely. Trying to time your inhale or exhale during the swing would actually have the adverse affect and potentially make you more tense, even just from the “stress” of trying to time the breath, possibly holding the breath for even a second to catch it at the perfect time.

      Take a look at Jason Day’s pre shot routine. He is a great example of taking a cleansing breath, visualizing a shot, and committing to the shot. It doesn’t need to be long or drawn-out, just a simple deep breath into the diaphragm (deep belly) and a full exhale. Then step into the shot and let it fly. If you take care of it pre-shot, the swing will take care of itself.
