All thumbs for better putting

When it comes to putting, the excuses are countless to avoid uttering the word... "choke"... a good-old "failure to perform" under pressure. It can be called a mis-read putt, problems with distance control and so on. In reality though, when anxiety runs high and your confidence runs low, you tend to over-think. Here's a quick-tip to avoid getting stuck in an over-thinking loop.

Hey Dave, yeah you do follow the thumb back with your eyes. One thing you’ll notice though is that your eyes don’t move as much and as if you’re following your putter head. The other thing you’ll notice is that, when you’re following your putter head back, it can often times looks shaky and ‘stuttery’ (for lack of a better word), but you don’t get that while looking at your thumb.

I tried this when I read about before and was pleasantly surprised by the results. I found one for hitting my irons fat…I focus on the ground in FRONT of the ball~~helped in hitting the ball 1st.

Qurstion: Have you tried the Garsen G-Max putter grip used by Heinrik Stenson? Met the originator of this grip 2 years ago and he gave me one. He showed me how to use it and it keeps your elbows in closer to your body. Won’t be coming off my Scotty Cameron putter anytime soon!!

Worth a try — and very humorously presented by Quite the Chap. Thanks for the advice and the laugh!

Colby …. certainly something to try like the Watson method looking at a mark on the grip.

In other words, keep it simple!!!

I wish I had seen this before yesterday. I played in the PGA Player Ability test (P.A.T.). I missed qualifying by fewer strokes than the number of bad short putts I made. I was putting OK with a number of burned edges. Then this happened: Because they force the use of a cart which I normally don’t use, I had to take handfuls of clubs to the fringe when I had a chip or short pitch. I forgot them on a hole and didn’t realize it for a hole. I had to race back in the cart, find the people who picked them up and race back to putt on a par 3 just after everybody else in my foursome finished putting. I didn’t wait to calm down. I hurried and 3-putted. I took me several holes to calm down – enough to miss qualifying. They don’t even allow removing the entire bag from the cart to take everything to the chip/pitch shot location. I wouldn’t have forgetten if I could have done that.

I have a problem pulling the trigger on my other shots, especially the irons. It’s like having the yips but putting is no problem.
I’ll try the thumb technique on my chips and full swings. Thanks
