Putt Around the Clock

Start burying more putts right away... even on sloped greens. This drill will help you predict breaks a lot easier. It will become like "clockwork".

This only works if other factors are not involved such as double breaks in putts and/or up hill than downhill after reaching the top of a hill.

Mr. Colby Johannson, I want to thank you very much for this eye awakening thought about how to read a green that has a high and low point without a mound between your ball and the hole. Like all good tips you present, they may have limitations based on the simple presentation of the theory and practical application you are presenting. But these simple instructions can be very helpful if the student takes the time to understand them and practice them. I have become a very positive fan of yours and thank you for your insight into the game as it has helped me in many ways.
I sinetunes see a little sniff comment or two from readers and I think they really did not get Mr. Johannson’s complete point or they just don’t think through what he is telling us. Well at age 71, I can say to these naive young people; keep dreaming your dream and stay in the high 80’s.

Ha, ha, ha, it shouldn’t take that long, Dr. Herb! Go through the routine while they’re putting.

Ever since I started face forward putting( Lateral Line2) four years ago I added a two ball variation to this to incorporate distance control to the break reading- 6’ then 4’ – must make both to move on and start over if there is a miss. Greatly improves confidence on the course greens for these shorter “second “ putts. After typical pre round putting warm up I finish with the clock drill on the most sloped hole then off to first tee

Auuuugh! this just adds more confusion to an already difficult game. LOL!
I think I will just stick to reading the break from behind the ball to the hole.
This just adds more things to think about, the break is determined most of the time by moisture, grass length, and speed. The rest is just looking at the topography of the lay between the ball and hole. Thanks anyway I’m to old to add more thought to the process.
