The One Club Challenge

So how does one get creative with their clubs and shots? Well limiting your selection of clubs will increase the need to get more creative with your shot making. Watch as I'm going to play 3 holes stretch with just my 3-iron. It will give you a taste of what shots you may face should you decide to do the same.

Try it out fellows you may find your score going down several strocks. But I suggest using a wedge when you can not bump and run the ball up or onto the green. For a little more control. When faced with a sand trap that does not have a high back lip. I will use the two iron and run the ball through and up and over onto the green. You have to puntch it to get over the lip.

      Dear Mr. Johannson
Thank you for the exciting 6 hole with a 3 iron and putter.
After many years of absence from the game where 116 per 18 was my norm. I picked up the Moe Norman swing and have done very well. I keep hitting my driver and 3 wood well but found that I do better off the tee with my copper Ping two iron and approach the green with the two and have had seven or eight chip ins from 50 yards or less with the two. I love to bump and run with the two and find my lags are very good with it. My best scores are below 87 to 83 with a two iron. With my woods I am about 90 to 86. I am getting better with the woods but found my 2 iron rolls the ball well when the fairway is not thick with grass. Of course I tend to use a wedge when necessary about three to four times in a round.
At age 71 with a swing speed of 67 tops, my two irons works very well. My drives are between 135 and 180 depending on the after roll and decline of the fairway slop. I have learned to work the natural flow of the fairway and can make my second or third shot follow the curvature of the land leading up to the green and sometimes up to the cup. This style of golf is much more exciting for me then hitting the ball in the air in a direction you hope it goes and not really knowing how the ball is going to react once it comes to ground. With my two iron, I have much more confidence in what the ball is going to do even with a miss shot.
As an old timer with new experiences on the course, I have come to appreciate very much what you do for all of us duffers and hackers with your videos. You have a certain je ne said quoi about your approach to mentoring people with your videos. Thank you so much as I am sure it has helped a lot of us who care to pay attention and learn.

Why would you leave the rake in the bunker?

Green keepers hate having rakes lying on the turf they cut ,so let the rake in the bunker

Seve putted with the 3-iron, too.

Watch your clip and at the 0:30 mark you show his left-handed putting with the back of his 3-iron.

So next time you take the ONE CLUB challenge, take ONE CLUB out of the bag, leave the bag in the trunk of your car and head to the first tee with your ONE CLUB. There is no need to carry the bag, but do take an extra ball or two.

He did, I didn’t find that clip until after I shot the video. Their entire video was based on picking one different club each hole- which is also a great idea. Use only a 7 iron on one hole and maybe a 5 iron on another. Great way to keep things interesting!

I’m impressed!! Arnold Palmer at one time said “if you played an entire round with a six iron, your score wouldn’t vary that much. Try a six iron with all the shots next time!

I’ll definitely try the 6 iron. I imagine Arnie’s right, I think I’d probably shoot roughly the same.

    Dear Mr. Johannson,
Thank you for the 6 holes with a 3 iron video. Very interesting to see you find the same good results with your 3 Iron as I do with my 2 Iron. Started playing golf in 1959 and quite six months later. Being a baseball player I was hitting all the fairways but the correct ones even with my 3 rd shot from my own fairway once I got back on it. Tried playing in 1986 and still had trouble with the driver off the Tee and just did not like the frustration I was feeling. Played again for a short time in 1997 with the help of a coach which only helped me straighten my drive. Still a very frustrating game for me.
Then in 2016 I discovered Moe Norman and his style of golf and knuckled down to learn it. I watched video after video from different people explaining the Moe Norman golf swing. Practiced on the range for over a year before going out on a course. There was a difference in play now. I was not hitting long say 140 to 160 off the tee but it was in the fairway. Now I hit a bit longer. But my swing speed is low around 67 but I am happy with it because I am accurate with my tee shots more times then not.
During this period of practice I learned to use my 2 iron as a chipper on level runs to the green and did better than with my wedges. I had learned to do this with a 7 iron but failed to get the long roll I wanted. So I continued to use the 2 iron from 70 to 1 yard off the green when I had no bunker to run through or over. In the old days I would do an 18 hole round with a score of 116 or so. If I did a 109 I was excited for the whole week. Last summer I started keeping score for real on my 18 hole rounds and found I was hitting from 96 to 88. You can imagine my delight and finding joy in playing the game.
This past Saturday it was a bit chilly. 48 degrees with a very light wind. I used my 2 iron sometimes off the tee but always on the fairway and chipping when a wedge was not necessary. I had 3 birdie and 9 pars. For a round of 76 ( two out of bound balls ). The course Par was 70. On Par 4s I just wanted to work the ball to the front of the green then do a lag hit with the 2 iron to the hole and in for a Par. On Par 5s which I birdied all three, I put my second shot within range of hitting 100 to 60 yards of the green and then hit it up close enough for a one putt ( nice hit to the front and let the ball run to the pin ) then in for a putt.
Of course I did course management for each hole and did not try to hit long shots to the green but rather lie up upon the green for a long lag hit to the hole. I am a pretty good putter so anything from 20 feet is not a difficult put to make. There were times I needed a wedge to get on but most of the time I placed my ball so I could run it up with my 2 iron. I never played such a good game since I started a year and a half ago. I do think that playing the 2 iron and using its ability to roll the ball a long way is far better than using woods that do not go as straight. More games like this will tell.
My point is that as you said, many golfers might find using a 3 or 4 Iron more often than a wood on the fairways and manage your shots so you keep them straight and workable may produce a better game. I for one who is now loving the game and there is very little frustration for me!!! Las Vegas Duffer Joel.

I think this really calls into question all the time (not to mention money) devoted to finding “just the right” set of clubs. Although I pretty much always carry a full set and try to pick the right club for each shot, I definitely believe that I could play most holes with just one club. Challenges might include deep bunkers, deep rough, carries over hazards, etc., but for most holes one club would work. It really makes a mockery of all the attention given to drivers in particular. Most golfers would probably be at least as well off with nothing stronger than a 5 iron. Then again, we all want to boom one out there 190 yards (oops, I meant 290) so we need that $500 driver. I feel the same way about balls. People might feel better about one ball or another, but I doubt the ball used has much affect on score, other than possibly psychological. I don’t doubt that it may affect some shots, but I doubt the affect is that great, and it is always possible to adjust.
