How to Escape Fairway Bunkers

Hitting into a fairway bunker shouldn't make you shutter with fear because escaping a fairway bunker is actually pretty simple.

Hitting into a fairway bunker shouldn’t make you shutter with fear because escaping a fairway bunker is actually pretty simple.

If you want to escape a fairway bunker there are only a few things to keep in mind. The biggest and most important thing that you should keep at the front of your mind is “contact with the ball before the sand”. Super important. Without that one fundamental you may feel like you’re in jail every time you hit into a fairway bunker.

Now in order to make contact with the ball before the sand you need to run through a quick checklist. Ball in middle of stance. Ground yourself. Keep your head level. And your feet quiet. Done. Swing away.

Lastly, you’re going to want to figure out if you’re going for the green or laying up in the fairway. This is a personal preference but a very important one nonetheless. Play smart.

I enjoy the content as well as the delivery of your advice… helpful as well as entertaining. You provide me with new things to consider as I attempt to improve my golf skills as well as a proper attitude as I try to implement those things. Perhaps as or more importantly, I actually believe I understand what you are communicating to me before I take your advice to the range and/or courses.

    Thank you.

Been watching these clips for a couple of years and find them really helpful. Chap’s personality is an additional plus.

Never left a “thumbs up” or, as they say in the navy, a hearty “bravo zulu”. Well, you have one tonight!

I am confused here,. I have always been instructed to hit the sand just before the ball in a bunker, ?is this new, ? Or have I got it wrong,? I think I will play the video again just to be sure.. I always look at your videos, and think you are great , I will play it again .😁🏌👍

      Barry,

What is described in the video is escaping from a fairway bunker where you need to hit the ball first. Seems what you’re referencing is a greenside bunker where you hit the sand a couple of inches behind (before) the ball. Hope this helps.

Your 60 Second Series Tips are great! Short and to the point but still include the necessary knowledge to implement the tip. They make me want to run to the course or the range and put each one to use.

Love your short tips. I would like to know how to play a draw with the driver. Every time I try I end up hooking the ball. Very Frustrating..

Re your fairway bunker tips, a teaching pro I respect told me that a great facilitator of successful completion of this challenge is to dig in your heels more than your toes for terrific stability!Hope this helps!!!

Watch your tips each time they come out… but I am having a repeated problem I need help with.. mostly with my fairway woods, I have gotten in a pattern where I hook the ball or evidently cut across it pulling it left instead of it going straight… PLEASE HELP!! what can I do or change?
