Proper Tee Height for the Driver

In this video Gene Parente talks about the depth of your driver's club face today versus those of "yesterday". While the new technology is impressive and incredibly helpful, other adjustments have to be made before you start swinging.

In this How to Golf video Gene Parente talks about the proper tee height for the Driver and your driver’s clubface’s depth versus those of “yesterday”.

Proper Tee Height for the Driver

While the new technology is impressive and incredibly helpful, other adjustments have to be made before you start swinging.

If you learned to golf on older technology, some set-up changes need to happen, including your proper tee height for the driver.

Have a watch and let us know what you think.

The driver you see Gene using to demo today’s tip is the new Speed System Driver. It was tested on the Robot by Golf Laboratories and found to add a whopping 16 yards to the average amateurs’ drive. Testing data and results can be found right here: Swing the club faster, and you can launch the ball further./

SO, with a 460 cc driver, does that mean that the ball should be teed so that when teed up the ball should be about half way above the top of the driver? I hope I am making sense.

    Daniel,

Yes you are generally correct. The caveat is how you deliver the club head can be different then how you address it. I recommend when you next go to the range take a roll of masking tape and put a piece on the face. Play with different tee heights and you will see where you are impacting on the face.

Why not give us some guidelines on tee height? My practice is to set the tee height so the middle of the ball is at the top of the face of my driver.

Would be easier if you stated what length tee to use, particularly step down tee, which makes it so much easier to get consistent tee height. I am guessing you are using a 2 3/4 height, or is it 3 “. Please clarify.

    1. Spray the face of your driver with some foot spray. 2. No need to worry about teeing the ball so “half of the ball” is above the top of your driver. That may or may not be true. I use “4 inch” plastic tees & all I do is place my finger about a “1/2 inch” up from the bottom & set the tee into the ground until my finger touches the ground surface. 3. It’s now time to make your proper “set up” : With the teed up ball just inside your front heal move your back foot away from the front foot until your stance is wider than your shoulder width. Turn your front foot toe about 20 degrees out toward the target. Keep your back foot square to your shoulder stance or maybe slightly toed out away from the ball. 4. Place your Driver head about 4-6 inches behind the teed up golf ball & bump your front hip a couple of inches towards the target. 5.Your head is behind the ball & your front shoulder is higher than your rear shoulder. Now you’re ready to make a “test” swing. 6. Check your driver face to see where the ball contacted the club face. 7. Make minor adjustments until the contact is consistently on or near the “sweet spot”. Note : The low point of your swing arc needs to be in that “4-6 inch” space where your Driver Head was at address. This will ensure the club will be attacking the ball on the upward side of your swing arc. Also..make sure you’re swinging the club from an “inside to out” angle of attack. Another thing I do that you might try is I close the face about 10 degrees at address. Your “grip to club head” relationship needs to be correct so the club head is “square” at impact. If you give it time & play around with the variables you’ll be amazed at how well it feels to make clean contact with increased yardage. Keep it in the short grass !

      Gene,
Love your lessons and research behind them. You do a great job. But I do agree with Daniel B., giving the reader a starting point, e.g. 1/2 a ball above top of driver head, really helps. Also, I think you meant
to say tee it up a half inch higher. Adding stance in could confuse the new golfer. Thanks again for all your right on advice.
