How To Chip It Fat From Tight Lies

Mr. Short Game is back with a simple technique that's perfect for chipping from tight lies. You know that shot with no grass underneath the ball where you think flawless execution is needed. Good news, it's not! As long as you have the "Chip Fat" or "Chunker shot" in your bag.

Mr. Short Game is back with a simple technique that’s perfect for chipping from tight lies.  Yes, Chip It Fat.

You know that shot with no grass underneath the ball where you think flawless execution is needed. Good news, it’s not! As long as you have the “Chip it Fat” or “Chunker” shot in your bag.

Chip It Fat From Tight Lies

I know it sounds crazy, but watch the video, and Mr. Short Game will explain. The best part, it’s shockingly simple.

Take a narrow stance. Keep your hands centered. Slightly open the clubface. Hit an inch or two behind the ball. Use the bounce of the club.

Master this technique, and you’ll never be nervous when chipping off a tight lie again.

Nice coaching, but compared to where I play, there was plenty of grass under your ball.

I agree. That is nowhere near a “tight lie.” Would love some chipping advice from actual hardpan.

On my course that is a plush lie. Show us how to do that same shot on hard pan DIRT. And, put the green another 4 feet higher.
I do like your videos because you really break it down to basics that even a child can understand. And, I like your closeups showing the position of the club face.

Great video again. I never had lessons, but I shoot decent scores. But with this information I think only good can happen, to my scores.

Great instruction! Easy to understand. Great Teacher! Does this work on real, hard pan with much less grass??

Matt, I seldom hit the greens and leave it short, just like in the video. The problem is it’s January and the temperature is 21°. I’m going to save this video and watch it again as the weather warms up. Thanks for this great tip.

Will this also work where the grass around the green is very long? Where I play it’s often 2 to 3 inches and I have trouble with the club halting and ball going nowhere.

Good tip but video not the best BECAUSE – you show the tip chipping from nice turf. How about showing the tip when chipping off hard dirt or very short grass – real hard pan?
