Pitching Wedge Distance is crucial to going low and shooting in the 80s.
Hey, Quite The Chap here for GolfersRX. Welcome to the How to Shoot in the 80’s series in the 60 Second Series, where today we’re going to learn to dial-in your Pitch shots and wedges.
We’re now hitting consistently crisp wedges or solid wedge ball-striking that, for the most part, fly a relatively consistent distance. Now we need to be able to hit them the correct distance…on command.
Pitching Wedge Distance
Here’s a great method to figuring our your distances:
– You’ve got 3-4 clubs, LW, SW, PW, 9 iron. Maybe you have a gap wedge, but it doesn’t matter; the idea is the same no matter the club count.
– Start with your LW and make 10 swings and record how far you hit the ball on average. Do this for all your wedges.
– SIDE NOTE: an inexpensive launch monitor will really help in an exercise like this.
– Now perform the same swing sequence with the same clubs BUT grip down an inch on your grip. Record the result.
– If you want to be really thorough, do the above exercise twice more with a 3/4 swing and again with a 1/2 swing. Recording the average distance each time.
What you’re going to be left with is a list of numbers. When faced with an 85-yard shot, you may think, well, I hit my SW 93 yards, but you may also notice that you hit your pitching wedge 85 yards with a 1/2 swing. Boom, there’s your club selection. Your Wedge shot setup.
This exercise to dial-in your Pitch shots is straightforward, but it is also time-consuming. But worth it if your goal is to shoot in the ’80s consistently. This is how to become a better wedge player.
Until next time keep it simple.
