How To Play The Low Wind Ball

Keep it loose, keep it smooth, keep it low

Hey, Quite The Chap here for GolfersRX. I was just recently on the beautiful island of Kauai, and as you can see, there was a bit of wind- it makes sense, it’s an island in the middle of the ocean.  Do you know how to hit a punch shot in golf?

Playing in the wind can oftentimes be exhausting and frustrating. We make three big mistakes while playing in the wind:

WE:
– grip our clubs harder, making ourselves tenser.
– swing harder, putting more spin on the golf ball.
– put the ball further back in our stance, causing us to hit down on it steeper, causing the ball to go higher.

Golf Punch Shot

All no-nos. Here are two tips you can take to the course the next time it’s windy:

Take the sage advice from Tom Watson and use more club and make the same swing. That’s the easiest one, the fail-safe. Especially if you keep a soft grip and don’t try to kill it, visualize floating the ball down to the pin.

I personally like to take even more club and make an abbreviated backswing and follow-through, and the one thing that I visualize is covering the ball with my chest:

– Chest is pointing straight down to the ball at impact.
– Shoulders are pointed in a straight line to the target.
– Hands are ahead of the clubhead.

Take either one of these golf punch shot styles to the course to test out and see which one works best for you. I’m pretty sure Mr. Watson knows what he’s talking about, but I like doing things my own way.

Until next time- keep’em low.
