Lean Into Your Irons

Lean into your irons into the downswing to make better contact

Hey, Quite The Chap here for GoflersRX. Are you chunking your irons so bad that you’re chunking your chunks…in today’s video, we cover Golf Shaft Lean.

I have the chunks. I’ve lived with them for years. I’ve tried a lot of things. And then Johnny Miller entered my life.…in a good way.

Miller has a saying…lean into your irons. Meaning, move forward on your downswing, so you get back to where you were at address or a little bit more forward.  He preaches Golf shaft lean at address and how to increase shaft lean.

Golf Shaft Lean

Here’s a great way to practice this:

Stand so your lead foot is touching the wall,
Address your imaginary ball,
Take the club back,
And as you come back into impact, ensure you’re moving your lead shoulder towards the wall.

You don’t want to be stuck back here…like so many of us…yes you.
Move it forward,
You can even exaggerate the exercise and bump the wall with your lead shoulder.

This is going to help you stop chunking the ball. You don’t want too much shaft lean Golf, but this golf tip will impact where the ball is hit first and then the turf. And that’s what you want.

Ball here – Divot here.

Move towards the wall to stop chunking.

Until next time keep it simple.

Love your approach to explaining the golf swing. One question though – you indicated in the video to stop chunking the ball that you move your shoulder forward. In the video you showed a golfer with his foot against the wall moving his shoulder to the wall on the down swing. When watching I noticed his head also moved considerably towards the wall – shouldn’t you keep your head as still as possible?
