Look forward to viewing hip mobility postures. As a very mature yoga teacher of 40+ years I had a titanium hip replacement 8months ago. I have been very respectful of my rehabilitation progress as know 2 ladies dislocated 5and6 months respectively. I ditched my sticks after 2 weeks and back teaching after 4 weeks. Can’t do full lotus yet but progressing well with practice. I watch your promotions on line regularly and enjoy. I’m back to golf but lack power with the driver – hip mobility !!!
Your recommendations anticipated with great interest.

Mark, thanks for these stretches. I am 68 and a scratch golfer. My flexibility is still very good. I can do pretty much all the hip stretches as shown without pain. Lucky I know. Overall I still have good rotation in the shoulders and back. My issue is with my right hamstring. I have had stiffness in the right leg now for about 2 months. Have been going to Chiropractor but it does not seem to be getting any better. The issue is that is does affect the follow-thru of the swing and tightness when I bend down. Can you give me some specific stretches or positions for the back of the right leg from top to in back of knee? Thanks

Hi John, The tightness in your hamstring could be a pull or a small tear if it has been bothering you for a couple of months. If stretching is making it tighter or even painful, stop stretching and rest it for a week or so. If stretching is helping, try putting one foot on the outside of the other with the pinky toes touching and try a standing forward fold. That will isolate the hamstring and give you a very deep stretch. You could also try a wide legged forward fold with the feet as wide apart as is comfortable (as long as you can keep the legs straight) and pull the toes in and the heels out just about 15 degrees. Fold forward between your legs taking your hands to the floor. Sort of feel like you are sticking your butt out a bit to get a little deeper here. You can also do the wide legged stretch seated on the floor with your legs wide. Again, if there is more discomfort or any pain, or decreased mobility and tightness the following day, schedule an MRI and make sure there is nothing structurally wrong.

Mark, I am about to have my 4th back surgery. I am 71 and was a member of the PGA Tour in 66-67. My lowest HDCP was +3.1. I have had my L2, L3, L4 L5 S1 fused. I still play to about an 8 but mentally I am still scratch. My question is that I know I have lost my distance and accuracy let alone flexibility. I don’t particularly hurt my back when I turn my lower body but I think it will hurt so I won’t follow through. I am 6’2” and 205 lbs. I , for once want to take yoga slow and not play full golf until I reduce my back symptoms . I assume Yoga would be your recommendation. Should I let my instructor know my limitations and ultimate goal?

    Mark:

What would be the best book to get for core training for seniors. I am 77 yrs. young, do stretching exercises each day, health club three times a week on the machines, and golf twice a week. Doing the same routine at the club and home stretches for years has placed me in a rut. Need a daily core routine that will increase my distance and overall joint mobility. Thank you
