Thanks Mr. Short Game! I’ve taken many a “deep dive down divot,” and will look to change that per your good advice.

Hi Mr Short Game, you mentioned to flatten, but what if you just maintain your plane, and not make it flatter or steeper. Basically, what is the advantage of flattening versus keeping the same plane?

Clipping thé ball off thé turf is fine if thé ball is sittting Well on top of thé GRASS ´
If It’ s sitting down you’ll havé to havé à descending blow and TAKE a divot Most irons shots require you to TAKE a divot

This does not seem consistent with another MSG video I just watched, which said to move forward forward, keeping the weight on the left side and taking a deep divot. I get that we don’t want the over the top move, but I’m not really sure what MSG is telling us. When I watch his swing when he actually tries to hit balls accurately, I don’t see either of these moves. I see a more balanced move with less weight transfer than for a driver or fairway wood but still an inside out move with a shallow angle of attack. I think sometimes instructors get too concerned with fixing a problem and end up exaggerating the fix. It seems to me that both of these videos fall into that category, and that they contradict each other. By the way, I usually like MSGs ideas.

Wow this was totally against what I thought was correct. No wonder I chunk half my short wedge shots!!!
    I feel stupid.

It was a very bad piece of instruction that transformed “hit the ball before the club’s path bottoms out” to “hit down in the ball.” There should be hall of fame for bad pieces of instruction, like this and “keep your head still,” etc.
