“Open the face” is the most useless advice in golf and I have heard it so many times I want to puke. Why can’t any of the instructors say HOW FAR? “Open the face about 30 degrees” or “open the face 45 degrees”. We can’t see how far you are opening it. It is arguably the most important part of any lesson about bunker play and yet I have never heard any instructor say how far to open it.

      Hi Richard
I have been to Dave Pelz school many times and the first thing they teach is to open the face of the club ” so the grooves on the blade point to your left toe”
      Hope this helps

Nice job Mr. SG…….all very good advice as this shot is….without a good plan and technique, will lead to a big number. Thanks for the advice!

Other than green side bunkers, bunkers are the worst situation for me. And I have an otherwise very good short game. I’m very comfortable opening the face and hitting a high lob, so I can’t wait to try opening up a 9-iron (or so) the next time I find myself in this situation. I love Golfers RX for easy to understand tips.

Great tip and presentation. I wish you would do a tip presentation on how to hit a shot from 5-10 feet in second cut grass off the green with different pin positions. Greatly appreciated.
